I am so excited to be a part of Cincy Chic’s “Honoring the Mothers in our Life” theme for this week. When I think of honoring my mother, anyone who is a mom, and the ways I feel my own children honor me, there is so much to be said about the importance of health and fitness. You see, I believe one of the best ways you can honor someone is to be a great role model for them.
My mother was always an exceptional role model to me. When I was growing up, there was not such a huge emphasis on fitness as there is today. My mother did not necessarily push me to workout in the true sense of what “working out” means to me now, but she did encourage physical activity to my butt off the couch! I was a very active child and teenager and spent many hours riding my bike, water skiing, and running around the neighborhood playing with my friends.
Both of my parents limited the amount of TV I was allowed to watch and the length of time I could play video games. And now, knowing what I know now, I can’t thank my mom and dad enough for that!
Today, I do my best to encourage my own children AND my mother (ok you too, dad!) to hold health and fitness as a top priority in their life. I am pretty sure my children are sick of my “preaching” to them by now. I even get eye rolled from my 8-year-old when I often answer, “yes” to the question, “Is this organic”?
But regardless of the amount of rolling eyes I get, my family knows how important health and fitness is to me and they honor me by not giving me too much crap about “promoting” it constantly! The top three things I try to instill in my children and my mother is:
1. Exercise or do physical activity six days a week.
2. Eat “clean” 5-6 days a week. That means no fast food!
3. Get regular check ups to stay on top of what’s going on with your body.
The definition of role model is “a person whose behavior in a particular role is imitated by others.” Are you that person for the mother in your life? Or maybe your mother is that person for you. What role do you play in keeping your loved ones fit? Are you a good role model?
This topic, and Mother’s Day in general, is so important to me that I want to give you a special offer: Bring in your mother or daughter to Keep It Tight Fitness during the month of May and receive 1 week of unlimited classes!
