Chandler, along with their boutique groomer Lucy Beery, are both experienced in the field having being groomers for the past eight years. “I love seeing animals dressed in clothes, I love the way it adds to their charisma and character, especially after a full groom,” she says. “It’s always fun to see the before and after results.”

But Chandler knows that grooming isn’t financially feasible for everyone. That is why she came up with a fair pricing system. “[It’s] affordable for nearly every house hold,” she says. “I love animals. I wanted to share my love of helping and caring for animals all shapes, sizes and backgrounds.”

In addition to their clothing and grooming services, they also offer boarding services and help owners host pet birthday parties. Cincy Chic: What is Paws Look and Listen?
Nick Hof, Owner and Trainer of Paws Looks and Listen: Paws Look Listen is a dog behavior and training company in Cincinnati. We primarily work with clients in their homes, specializing in behavioral issues and dog & baby preparation. We also offer group classes every week for puppies and dogs.

Cincy Chic: Who’s behind the business?
Hof: I’m the owner and trainer of Paws Look Listen. I hold the title of Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed and I graduated with distinction from the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Behavior and Training. I’m also a licensed presenter for the Family Paws program. I’ve has been working with dogs for more than a decade and am owned by three Saint Bernards and a mixed breed dog.

Cincy Chic: What’s the inspiration behind it?
Hof: Paws Look Listen was born from a need that we saw to help owners and their dogs. We often saw owners frustrated with their dogs behaviors and without the knowledge to know where to turn. Although we have extensive knowledge and experience working with a variety of dogs and their people, we don’t believe that we are the perfect match for every owner or problematic behavior. If we can’t help you, we can guarantee that we’ll be able to point you in the direction of the person who can.

Cincy Chic: What types of classes do you offer?
Hof: The majority of the work that we do is in-home training and our most popular program is Day Training. We come by several days a week and train your dog for you at your home and then show you how to replicate our results through simple training exercises. We also happily train owners alongside their dogs. Paws Look Listen also offers two group classes that meet on Saturday mornings. Our Surviving Puppyhood class is great for new puppy owners and Mind Your Manners is just the ticket for older dogs in need of some manners.

Cincy Chic: When did you launch Paws Look and Listen?
Hof: Paws Look Listen was launched in October 2010 and we will be celebrating our 5 year anniversary next month.

Cincy Chic: Can you give us price points for different types of training?
Hof: The cost for both of our group classes is currently $160 for a full six-week course. The cost for in-home training can vary dramatically based on our clients’ needs but we always begin with an initial consultation. This is a 90-minute session the cost for which is $160.

Cincy Chic: Is there anything new on the horizon for Paws Look and Listen?
Hof: We are very excited to be launching a e-newsletter that should be sent out beginning next month. Your readers can send us an email at nick@pawslooklisten.com to be added to our mailing list. You might not remember Dino, but he was our first child. With us before we got married, since we bought our first house, and there when we brought you home from the hospital. He loves giving you big, wet kisses. You love laughing at him as he races up and down the hall chasing a ball. He’s your personal garbage disposal, looking forward to every little morsel that drops from your high chair.

He has been our funny, spirited and loving companion for eight years now. He is and always will be an integral part of our family, but yesterday we had to send him away to a place where he’ll live out the rest of his days.

Over the past few years, Dino has developed severe anxiety. And as a result, he has bitten quite a few people — me and your daddy (multiple times) included. Ninety-nine percent of the time, he is the most loving, “velcro dog” there is. But there’s that unexpected and unpredictable one percent of time where his “fight or flight” reflexes kick in and he lashes out.

We’ve tried everything — vets, behaviorists, trainers, week-long camps, special collars, sprays and a variety of different medications — to cure his anxiety and stop the biting. Nothing worked. Eventually, we ran out of options to try, and we simply couldn’t risk anyone else getting injured.

So, your daddy and I had to make a difficult decision this weekend to send him back to his first home. Thankfully, the breeder we got him from said she would gladly take him in. Not only does she still have his mother and one of his siblings, but she lives in Riverside California, so they go to the beach and on hikes often. The breeder is also a vet tech with ample access to healthcare resources for Dino.

It’s comforting to know he’s going to a familiar, healthy and happy home. But that doesn’t make our hearts ache any less. He’s our precious little boy. We love him so very much.

The perfectionist in me hates that I couldn’t fix him. The realist in me knows we tried absolutely everything. The mom in me knows it’s what we had to do. The dog lover in me knows he’ll be happy in his new home.

But sometimes the best decisions are the most difficult. You just have to be thankful you had something that made saying goodbye so painful.

So, thank you, Dino. Thank you for all the memories, furry cuddles, and wet kisses… You’ll always be our little boy. And he’ll always be your big brother.

They start with a consultation where a Zephyr stylist gets to know you and your hair. The stylist talks to you about the style you want and determine what would best flatter your face shape and attire. From there, they choose the unique blend of products to use during the customized blowout service, which can last for days when properly maintained. “That way, they are getting a blowout that is specific to their needs, for both their hair and the style they want,” says Burke.091415BEAUTY2

Burke began her career as a corporate event planner and was ready for a change. In 2013, her dad showed her an article in the New York Times about DryBar franchising. Burke had been to blowout bars in various cities and had loved the experience. She describes herself as being “hair inept” back then and preferred when other people could style her hair. Regardless, she was still interested and applied for one of DryBar’s franchises.

At the time, DryBar was not taking outside franchises due to their focus on corporately- owned salons. Determined, Burke and her dad decided they would open their own salon instead. Owning something of her own has always been something she’s wanted to do. Her inspiration stems from her dad and brother-in-law who are both entrepreneurs.

The name “Zephyr” was inspired by the aesthetics Burke envisioned when she thought about her dream salon: ice blue, white and shiny. After describing to her dad how she wanted the salon to appear, he began brainstorming. They are both huge fans of The Red Hot Chili Peppers and their favorite song by them is The Zephyr Song. The word “Zephyr” means “a breeze from the west” or “a gentle breeze.” Not only does the word reflect the appearance of the salon, but it also incorporates the dryers “blowing.”

So what makes a blowout different than an at-home blow-dry? Burke says round brushing is key. “It is near impossible to get the tension you need to stretch the hair out and set it,” says Burke. “There is no way a person can get the angle they need to round brush the back of their head as well as someone that is standing directly behind them.”

Another important part of Zephyr’s blowouts that makes them unique is that they are a Pureology-exclusive salon. According to Burke, Pureology is Redken’s high-end brand made for colored hair and they also have amazing styling products. “The line is quite extensive and Zephyr does not use the same combination on every client,” she explains.

A blowout is meant to last, Burke says. “Think about when your Grandmother would go to the salon every week and get her hair set,” she explains. “It’s the modern day version. We have clients that come weekly and don’t wash it between blowouts.” Maintaining your blowout means you won’t need to wash and style your hair multiple times a week, saving your hair in the long run. We chat with the owner of Curate Boutique about her recent transition from a brick-and-mortar store to a redesigned retail site and her exciting new lifestyle blog, Radiant Rogue.

The retail world is changing. No one knows that better than Courtney PeGan, who chased a dream – inspired by her late father – and opened Curate Boutique, a Hyde Park-based women’s clothing and accessories shop in 2013.

“Growing up, my dad had his own business for 40 years, so that was normalcy for me,” says PeGan. “I grew up working with the family and I saw how fulfilling owning your own business can be. It was always my end goal that I wanted to do my own thing.”

Over the course of her first two years in business, PeGan hosted events in her store, donating a portion of sales and 100 percent of raffles to her father’s foundation. In May 2014, she was able to award her first four-year scholarship to a local senior hoping to attend school. “It was so exciting to see all of the hard work pay off and to be able to positively impact someone’s life,” she says.

But along with the successes, there were also struggles. Primary of which, PeGan says, was the adaptation needed to accommodate changing retail behaviors that were making a dramatic shift toward digital. “I am an entrepreneur with a headstrong belief that there is nothing I can’t do myself – but this typically gets me in trouble when it is time to move heavy furniture,” PeGan laughs.

Turns out, she did need to move heavy furniture, because she made the decision to close the storefront in June 2015 and focus solely on the boutique’s digital efforts.

“Being my own boss and owning Curate Boutique was my dream. When I opened the doors to Curate in early 2013, my entire life changed. I loved working for myself. Even when I worked more hours per day and week than ever before, I felt energized and excited. It was easy to pour my whole life into it because I loved it, and I believed in myself and my tenacity. Unfortunately, wanting something and working hard doesn’t always yield business results that can pay the bills.”

After a two-month hiatus to redesign the website and logo, PeGan recently launched her new online-only boutique. She says the new Curate Boutique website makes it more user friendly, and more interactive with customers. In addition to Curate’s new e-commerce site, PeGan also relaunched her blog, now titled “Radiant Rogue,” to inspire her customers and reach them on a more personal level as she did in her store. “I loved connecting with shoppers in store,” she says, “and I wanted to preserve that personal connection in a digital way. I see Radiant Rogue as an opportunity to share my journey both personally and professionally.”

PeGan says she wants her journey of inspiration, risk-taking, adaptation and perseverance to inspire others. “I hope my story strikes a chord with some and inspires them to keep fighting for their dreams,” she says.

With the new streamlined business concept, PeGan says that lends itself perfectly to the new “Capsule Wardrobe Project” concept she’s excited to launch in the near future. According to PeGan, the Capsule Wardrobe Project is loosely defined as a seasonal wardrobe limited to 36-50 pieces of mostly high quality wardrobe essentials plus a few seasonally trendy pieces that mix and match easily. “The idea is that limiting the number of options in your closet doesn’t have to limit your personal style at all,” she explains.

“We’ve found that ballet still remains a mystery to many of our contemporaries; however, we’ve also found that those same people come to love it as much as we do once they’ve been properly exposed to it and have the opportunity to interact with the creators and artists that bring it to life,” says Attitude Co-Founder and President Matthew Selker.

Selker and Elise Meyer are the co-founders of Attitude, and want to give the groups members the chance to get up close and personal with the artists of the Cincinnati Ballet. There aren’t any prerequisites necessary to join Attitude, just the desire to share in on the passion of ballet.

As part of its young professionals group, Attitude offers the Young Patrons package. Totaling $150, the package runs through the 2015-2016 season and includes three performance tickets as well as access to three exclusive events.

Located in the heart of the Westwood Historic Business District, Four Directions Studio is a yoga studio owned and operated by Rob Jefferson and Michelle Red Elk. “We opened this location in June 2014 as an expansion of our home yoga studio, Side Porch Yoga, which hosted semi-private classes for several years,” says Red Elk.

“Since launching, we have a wonderful community of yogis that come to our studio each day to share yoga with us,” Red Elk continues. “We realize that people come to the practice of yoga for various reasons so we honor students where they are right now and promote and environment of acceptance. We are inspired to share the practices of yoga with all who are interested.”

For Red Elk, her connections made with students are what she finds most rewarding. “We have instructors from a variety of training and practice backgrounds that share their long-term study and knowledge so generously – and we are inspired by this open exchange,” she says. “It’s very rewarding to see students come into class feeling stressed or weary and leave feeling lighter and happier. That is a true gift.”

Currently, Four Directions Studio offers yoga classes each day of the week, ranging in style from very gentle to more rigorous forms of yoga. “We have several membership options, class pass packages or drop-in classes available,” says Red Elk. “Drop-in classes are $13, five class passes are $58 and 10 class passes re $108.”

Red Elk also emphasizes that they have just opened registration for their Yoga Study Circles that are expected to begin in January 2016. “We are happy to host these in-depth courses on the deeper and more subtle aspects of yoga and meditation,” she says. “Our Yoga Teacher Training Program is in the works for late 2016 to early 2017.”

In looking to the future, Red Elk’s goal is to continue growing their circle of students and further sharing practices that calm and ease yogis within the community. “Our intention is to offer a space where people can find ease and harmony throughout the busy week,” she says. “We know this is so valuable for those who have their attention take in many directions with work, family, school and other important commitments,” Red Elk continues. “The community of fellow yogis is very supportive and great connections are made between those who share yoga with one another in our studio.”

Sara McMurray Oates, Owner of Social Graces: Social Graces is Lebanon’s newest boutique! Just opening 3 months ago, we specialize in personalized gifts, jewelry and apparel. We offer excellent choices in contemporary apparel and essential, sometimes witty, lifestyle goods for your home or as a gift. We strive to introduce new brands and hunt down new merchandise to bring fresh items to our historic downtown.

Cincy Chic: What’s the inspiration behind the boutique?
Oates: The inspiration behind Social Graces came together with time. Being a lifelong resident of Lebanon, I spent years in retail shops working for family and friends. After college I dreamt of opening my own boutique and offering items I’d discovered throughout my travels while bringing a new twist to downtown Lebanon. A passion and dream met opportunity in May 2015 when my husband and I started bringing ideas and design to fruition.

Oates: I think I enjoy seeing my dream come to life and sharing it with my great and supportive customers. I enjoy the chuckles and “look at this!” reactions I get from customers when they see our witty and unique gift items. It brings me joy to hear “You have an amazing shop!” It makes me want to work harder to find new products.

Cincy Chic: What’s new on the horizon?
Oates: Since we are only 3 months old, we are still developing and getting new products in regularly! We are always looking for that great find so there is always something new at Social Graces, this is what drives us!

Our life coach columnist talks about enduring - not avoiding - uncomfortable situations to build mental and physical strength.

I was working out at the gym recently when I spied a new piece of cardio equipment. I noticed a few people trying it out and I was curious as to what I might be missing. Finally, I worked my way over to check it out. On my way, I passed one of the employees and I inquired about the machine.

She informed me that she already had used the new equipment and had stayed on this “climbing apparatus” for 70 minutes. Well, if she could do it, so could I. As I journeyed toward the machine, I came across a few other people that had tried it out. They all reassured me that it was very hard. I got snapped in and quickly started climbing. Within seconds, I felt myself struggling to catch my breath — it took all my willpower to stay on for two whole minutes. When I got off the machine, I was shaking and gasping for air.

I made it through a whole two minutes of climbing. Now, what irritated me about this experience was that I consider myself to be in pretty good shape. I bike long distances every weekend and I have built up my endurance. Yet, I struggled to make it through two minutes!

I decided that I was capable of much more than that first try. Two days later, I got on the climber and told myself that I was not getting off until it hit five minutes. A couple of days after that, I told myself that I was going to make it 10, and so on, until last week, when I made it through 45 minutes on that evil machine.

Now, how did that happen?

Along the way, people would come over to assess my progress. I would listen to their multitude of rationalizations as to why they shouldn’t and wouldn’t work out on this particular piece of equipment. In other words, they had excuses to not take action.

There’s a reason that I’m sharing this story and it’s not to impress everyone with my physical prowess. I don’t think that this experience is much different than anything you attempt to take on in life. The first time you try something new can be quite difficult and to be honest, failing miserably is not a good feeling. I’m betting that you’re a lot like me and you like to feel confident and comfortable in what you attempt in life. However, the key to making it to the other side is being willing to walk through the bad feelings.

You see, the individuals that I witnessed trying it out and never going back could not get past that uncomfortable feeling. They were not able to wait it out for those good feelings that finally kick in when you make it to 45 minutes. They could not see past RIGHT NOW.

And there you have it. Whether it’s a potential career opportunity at work, a new diet that you need to adopt, or the thought of a career switch, the future can look quite unpredictable and downright uncomfortable. However, if you can just acknowledge the way you feel, WHY you feel the way you do, recognize the rationalizations for what they truly are (excuses), and STILL push through the uncomfortable feelings, you’re going to achieve your life goals.
