Chic Spotlight: Paper Wings

The owners of MiCA 12/v are opening a new art store in the heart of Over-the-Rhine. Read on for all the details.

Paper Wings is a new storefront in OTR featuring all things paper related.

Cincy Chic: What is Paper Wings?
Carolyn Deininger, Founder of Paper Wings: Paper Wings is a new store by the owners of MiCA 12/v (Mike & Carolyn Deininger) featuring things paper related – cards, notebooks, journals, sketchbooks, and original local art on paper. It is two doors down from MiCA at 1207 Vine St in Over-the-Rhine.

Cincy Chic: What’s the inspiration behind the new store?
Deininger: The inspiration is my love of paper goods, and the paper stores she frequented as a kid and an art student. I’ve always loved a brand new notebook or sketchbook. It’s full of possibility.

Also increased demand at MiCA for more cards and paper products (and no room left to feature them) made us feel like it was a good time to try. MiCA has been selling more and more greeting cards as customers try to balance the frenzy of on screen, digital communication with slower, more thoughtfully handwritten, personal letters and cards on paper.

Cincy Chic: Who’s behind Paper Wings?
Deininger: Mike & Carolyn Deininger of Cincinnati, husband and wife team responsible for the gift shop and gallery MiCA 12/v on the corner of 12th & Vine in OTR. After 11 great years in business at MiCA in OTR we felt it was the right time to develop something new and provide another venue for local art and indie made gifts. Mike has a management background and I have a fine arts background. I tend to be more of the creative factor while Mike facilitates the running of the stores. (Together we make a great team)

Cincy Chic: What types of products do you sell?
Deininger: We sell local, original artwork on paper, as well as our favorite paper goods; cards, journals, sketchbooks, planners, wrapping paper, and some other paper related gift items. We have a beautiful line of jewelry by Wyoming artist Susan Fleming. The pieces are cast silver with Japanese chiyogami paper inset. We also have some fun cork globes where you can mark all the places you’ve travelled with pushpins, or use it to save and display trip memorabilia – a photo, train ticket stub, or museum tickets. Love letter napkins are worthy of hanging on your wall. These feature the text of actual love letters written by famous authors and artists.

We are really excited about the original artworks in our first gallery show. These incredibly detailed collages are using found, antique illustrations by local artist Sara Caswell Pearce.  Sara has had shows at the CAC, the Carnegie, the Weston Gallery, the Mercantile Library, and other prominent art venues. We are proud to have her work in our first show – which will run through July.

Cincy Chic: What makes Paper Wings unique?
Deininger: What makes Paper Wings unique is the special aesthetic vision of the store. Each item in the store is chosen thoughtfully by myself, with intent. The focus is on finding items made by local and/or independent designers/makers featuring great design and craftsmanship, that fits a specific aesthetic to create a curated collection. This carefully chosen collection will compliment and not take away from the local artwork that shows in the gallery portion of the store. The selection process sets Paper Wings apart from other paper stores. But mostly it is the original art, – there will be monthly revolving art shows in the gallery section of the store, with original works on paper. Art openings will be on every Final Friday. Our inaugural show is “Flights of Fancy”, collages and paper cuts by Sara Caswell Pearce, opening on the 28th of June, from 7pm to 9pm.

Cincy Chic: Is there anything new on the horizon?
Deininger: We will be offering workshops by local makers where you can learn book making, paper marbling, calligraphy and more.

Cincy Chic: Where can readers go to learn more and follow along?
Deininger: Follow us on Instagram and Facebook or on the web at
