Pure Empowerment
Pure Romance went from being a mere dream in the early 1980s to a multi-million-dollar business only 30 years later. Read on for more about this burgeoning company.

Patty Brisben, Pure Romance founder

Unless your life has been lived under a sexually repressed rock, you've heard of Pure Romance and the vision it seeks to bring to the relationships of couples everywhere. But this now-common bedroom name company wasn't always so big.

In 1983, the beginnings of Pure Romance were stirred after business founder Patty Brisben watched a Phil Donahue Show episode that "featured women working as in-home direct sales consultants selling intimacy aides and empowering others," says the company's website.

Brisben decided to become a part of this new trend because she saw it as a way to be able to have more quality time with her four children -- she was a single parent, so this was an important factor. She couldn't have known that after working for a while as a successful consultant that she would hatch her own company that would forever change the way the country -- and later, the world -- looked at intimacy items.

Pure Romance, as you probably know, operates largely through the volition of consultants, who work in 260 markets. This is a key component of the business, as it allows women to use the same channels to control their own financial destinies as Brisben once did to leave her former career as a medical assistant.

The business is really spurred on by the momentum contributed by every member of the company, says Jessica Brooks, a senior director in Jacksonville, Fla. "The energy that is given off by every single person that works for Pure Romance just gives everybody more energy," Brooks says. "It's just positive energy all the time, and I love that. That's just what keeps it growing and going in a great direction. Who doesn't want to be a part of that?"

Becoming a part of the exciting environment of working at Pure Romance also comes with a training program to help new consultants get oriented with the goals of the business -- and effective sales tips -- in mind. After viewing online training videos from the company, consultants get started having their own selling parties.

But, in keeping with the mantra, "in business for yourself, but never by yourself," consultants always have access to support from Pure Romance, which includes "professional marketing materials, information from credentialed sexual health educators and the best training program in the direct-sales industry."

The combination of the business' strong leadership, from Brisben and her four children, with the network of motivated consultants make it no surprise that Pure Romance continues to expand. Pure Romance of Puerto Rico has become a $6 million per year market within a few years of its inception, and last year the company sprouted corporate roots in South Africa and Australia.

If the growth in these countries follows the trajectory of expansion in the Puerto Rican market, it's safe to say this is not the last the world will hear from this booming business.
