Doc Talk: Medical Motion
As kids head back to school and sports gear up again, one local physician discusses the cause of recurring sports pains and injuries, and the advanced technology they're using to diagnose and treat them.

Sometimes the particular way a young athlete plays a sport ends up causing the same injury again and again. Still, the actual cause of that injury can be very difficult to see with the naked eye.

In those cases, many athletes turn to the medical motion machine at St. Elizabeth Sports Medicine. The high-tech digital video assessment system allows our sports medicine specialists and trainers to break down an athlete’s movements so that they can be analyzed for problematic actions that might be resulting in the repetitive injury.

“So let’s say a cross country runner has a lot of overuse injuries in his legs. Well, we just don’t solely treat those injuries; we also want to ask why this young athlete gets so many overuse injuries. Could it be something with the way he runs, in his gait or stride, or how his foot strikes the ground?” says St. Elizabeth Sports Medicine Director Dr. Michael Miller.

“With medical motion, we’re saying, ‘Okay you’ve treated the problem, but now let’s look and see if there’s anything we can do to intervene and keep you from getting it again.’”

Dr. Miller said the video analysis tool has become quite popular with local athletes who wish to improve performance and eliminate the source of ongoing problems during play. In the long run, medical motion analysis can save young athletes a lot of lost playing time, pain and potentially a chronic medical condition from repetitive injuries. If you’re interested in learning more about the system or scheduling a session, please call St. Elizabeth Sports Medicine at (859)301-5600.
