See how one local lady is blending her two passions - family and fashion - through her kids’ clothing store in Hyde Park.

After setting a personal goal to pursue her passion for fashion before turning 30, Amy Fessler was shopping at SOHO, a high-end women’s fashion boutique in Hyde Park, and learned by chance that it was for sale.

She bought the store a few short weeks later and the rest is history. Fast forward five years, a marriage and two children later, Fessler was in The Spotted Goose (shopping again, go figure – her words!) and overheard it was for sale. “It felt meant to be,” says Fessler. “It wasn’t the perfect time, as my son was only a few months old. However, we didn’t want to let the opportunity pass by,” she recalls. “It felt like the right next step for our family, so we made it work!”

Although it may not have been the perfect time, it was the perfect business to purchase right after having children! The Spotted Goose is a high-end children’s fashion boutique located in Hyde Park that features designers from all over the world. From fashion forward t-shirts and sweaters to brand name booties and shoes, Fessler says The Spotted Goose is a place where young fashionistas can choose clothes to express their own personal style.

“My children are already developing their own little styles,” says Fessler. “My son insists on being comfortable – which is sometimes very frustrating to me since that means he won’t wear several things I want him to! And my daughter loves mixing patterns and textures. She has a really good eye and is true to what she loves and feels good in. I really admire that about her!”

Becoming a mom changed the way Fessler viewed everything in life. She and her husband both own their own businesses and involve their children as much as possible to instill a strong work ethic in them at a young age. “They know what work is and that it is important to always do your best,” says Fessler of her children. As for being a mom and a career woman, she says, “No day is the same for an owner of a small business and that is one of the things I most appreciate about it!”

According to Fessler, the previous owner did an amazing job making children and everyone in the community feel welcome and at home at The Spotted Goose. As the current owner, Fessler continues to provide this same warm atmosphere to her guests, making clients feel welcome and happy when they are shopping there. With so many places to shop and the option to purchase clothing online, she especially appreciates when people take time to experience the boutique in person. “We love styling outfits and gifts for people’s littlest loved ones. It is truly our pleasure to help our clients find exactly what they are looking for!”

According to co-owner Justin Cavinee, the motivational messages and fun color choices are what sets She Fresh apart from other athletic apparel options. “We try to remain fashionable in an athletic genre,” Cavinee adds. “We noticed that most athletic and gym apparel was very athletic and not very fashionable. We try to incorporate fashion in every piece of apparel we produce.”

Cavinee and business partner Jimmie Bell are fitness fanatics and noticed a void in the market for effective athletic apparel that was also chic. She Fresh Apparel offers three styles of shirts: tank tops, v necks, and crew necks. Bell and Cavinee were actively involved in choosing the fabric for their product because they know what it is like to be dripping with sweat and uncomfortable while working out. “We painstakingly were touching and feeling every possible garment available,” Cavinee explains. “We print only on tri-blend material made from 50% cotton, 25% polyester, and 25% rayon which is fashionable but also very comfortable for the active woman.”

The She Fresh Apparel is designed for a range of active women in mind, Cavinee says. “The cool part of our movement is that we try to market to any active women. Not just Crossfit, not just bodybuilders nor powerlifters. But ALL women no matter their fitness level,” says Cavinee, adding that the overall goal of their business is to create an atmosphere where all women feel comfortable with themselves and feel as if they are a part of a team that has their back. As former athletes, Cavinee and Bell feel that you are at your best when you are not alone while trying to achieve your fitness goals.

Creativity is important to the She Fresh design team, Cavinee says, giving the example of their “Lets Flex and Chill” shirt (a take on the trendy “Netflix and Chill”) and “Strong is the new Sexy” shirt (a nod to “Orange is the new Black”). “We collectively come up with sayings and designs at our company,” says Cavinee. “Bell and I bounce ideas off of each other. Then, we send them to a focus group made up of a melting pot of active women [to see how the slogans are received].”

When you buy from She Fresh Apparel, you are a part of something more than just buying a shirt. “We want our customers to feel fashionable, hip, and comfortable as well as empowered when they wear our apparel,” Cavinee says.

Philippe Haas Bespoke Tailoring creates unique, custom suits for men and women who want a luxurious garment and experience. Located in a stately building downtown on Court St., Haas’ showroom is the epitome of class. Deep green carpets, soft leather chairs and floor to ceiling windows with natural light spilling through to create the perfect setting for an urban, yet elegantly fashionable affair.

At Philippe Haas Bespoke Tailoring’s downtown-based studio, clients can peruse seasonally sourced fabrics, choose from a selection of fashionable buttons, and have measurements taken all while sipping a drink from the stylish bar cart. Haas opened his storefront less than a year ago when he returned to Cincinnati after spending time living in Berlin. He gained professional fashion experience while living in Berlin traveling and working all over Europe opening stores, overseeing the buying and establishing client relationships.

This experience afforded him the relationships with the companies based in Europe — primarily Italy and the United Kingdom — from which he sources the fabrics used for clients today. Haas also has a personal relationship with fashion. Throughout his entire life, he has always been exposed to high quality and high fashion design. His grandfather was a talented tailor in Morocco and his mother worked in her own store downtown for 20 years. “I always received nice clothes as gifts when I was younger,” says Haas, laughing as he recalls being the only kid at school with a velvet sports coat. What Haas appreciates most about owning his own business is the ability to say “yes” to everything. Any garment can be customized exclusively to the individual client’s specific taste, which is the essence of Bespoke Tailoring. From the outer fabric of the garment to the lining; the piping to the stitching; the pockets to the lapels- all aspects of the final product will be a reflection of the style and sophistication of the designer.

“With the wide range of options in fabrics, patterns and accents, it can occasionally be overwhelming to design your own suit,” says Haas. “I like educating my clients in how to create and style their pieces. My goal is to have everyone looking and feeling good.” Recently, Haas has debuted a new line of pocket squares for the fall and winter season. They are made from wool and hand-stitched in Italy. Currently, Haas is open at the showroom by appointment only and prices are available upon request. He also offers on-site consultations, which feature the same caliber service as his downtown studio, with the added intimacy and comfort of never leaving your home or office.

Monera Chic Boutique is nestled in a quaint corner storefront in Fort Thomas, KY. “When we opened the store in 2014, we were the first retail business in this complex,” said Tera Huddleston, co-owner of Monera Chic Boutique.

Initially, Huddleston was inspired to begin making jewelry by her friend and co-owner of Monera Chic Boutique, Monica Bruns-Howard, as a way to keep her mind off of the constant battle she was fighting against colon cancer. Together, they are the heart and soul of the store. There is no Monera without both Monica and Tera, a business that has been named by combining both of its founders’ names. When Huddleston and Bruns-Howard first began creating jewelry, they would host trunk shows from their homes or set up at craft shows to sell their products. Then, as returning clients and friends began to make requests and suggestions for specific items in addition to the jewelry being made, the ladies knew they needed to expand.

Today, you can find something for everyone at their store. From shoes, accessories and clothing to home décor, Monera Chic Boutique offers quite the variety. “We no longer sell and create our own jewelry,” says Huddleston. “But we do still personally select everything in the store, we are the buyers, and you will always find one of us working in the store.” Since opening their business in 2014, they have doubled in size. Hosting fun events, such as themed “Girls Night Out” is one way Monera Chic Boutique has curated a loyal clientele. They offer wine, appetizers and entertainment while you shop and enjoy exclusive sales. “We do not run sales all year so this is a fun way to show our customers, whom are our friends, our appreciation,” says Huddleston.

That is one of the great things about Monera Chic Boutique, Huddleston says: you get personal treatment from their staff. In fact, she adds, returning customers are often greeted by name and shown fresh pieces that match their individual style. “When you know your clients as friends, you know who you are shopping for and the things they are going to love,” says Huddleston.

If you are a first time shopper, Huddleston says the staff at Monera Chic Boutique goes out of their way to make you feel welcome and genuinely wants to help you find something that is as unique as you are.

They also post a new look styled by pieces from the boutique almost daily on Facebook and Instagram so you always know what is new in the store. Prices range from $30-100. Another plus of Monera Chic Boutique? “We can both walk here from home,” Huddleston laughs. “It’s perfect for us!” As for the future, they have no plans of expanding. “Everything fell into place,” says Huddleston, “I feel like we are where we were supposed to be all along. I am a believer that everything happens for a reason.” And after two years, Huddleston says she still gets a sense of pride and excitement every time she unlocks the doors, turns on the lights, and opens for business.

Michelle Brinker, owner of Classic Prep Monograms, has “always loved a good monogram” and was inspired to start her business by “the new and creative ways they [monograms] can be used to showcase personal style.”

Being an Ursuline Academy Alumna, Brinker is no stranger to being surrounded by color-loving preps. And if you’ve ever asked yourself if you can go overboard with monogramming, the answer is “no!” she laughs. Brinker proudly displays Reese Witherspoon’s quote on her website, “My sheets are monogrammed, so is my silverware and pretty much everything else I own. My rule is, if it’s not moving – monogram it.”

Now that the fall season is underway, Brinker has a few trend forecasts for the upcoming winter season. Monogrammed Blanket Scarves continue to be big for 2016 as well as our Pom Pom Hats. They just make me smile,” says Brinker. “Also, our Beaded Monogrammed Bags are perfect for Holiday parties. Believe it or not, the camo is our best seller!” She adds that their Game Day clutches are a close second.

COLLAR UP Shirts is an innovative brand with a sense of humor, style and sensibility.

“Comfort and fit are taken to the next level – with COLLAR UP undershirts. Bunching, twisting, wrinkles, bulkiness and discomfort – out,” says Bob Dilts, one of the founders and owners of COLLAR UP Shirts. He and his partners, Julie Larger and Gail Spence, have collaborated to create a product kindly referred to as the mullet of shirts, business up top…you know the rest.

“We’d like to think we have a decent sense of humor. Look, we are selling shirts here. More precisely, 21st Century Dickies,” Dilts laughs. “Most of our products don’t even have sleeves… So we’re not going to take ourselves too seriously… At the same time, we are serious about this endeavor. We are completely enthusiastic about our product. We created it, own it and believe in it – 100%.”

So how exactly did this half dress shirt, half undershirt come to be? While at the office, Dilts was wearing your standard dress shirt and sweater combination which was causing him incredible discomfort. According to Dilts, the twisted arms of the shirt, the way the shirt bunched and jumbled all the way around the waist when tucked in, not to mention the dreaded perspiring at work was enough to make him basically throw a tantrum in the office (remember that sense of humor?).

Luckily, his now-co-owner of COLLAR UP Larger was listening to him lament about his shirt snafu. She then revealed her secret to collared shirt success: wearing a blouse with the sleeves “hacked” off. Apparently, she had been buying blouses with full sleeves and cutting them off to create a comfortable yet professional look under blazers and sweaters. This ingenuity is what sparked the conversation from which COLLAR UP was born.

“Securing the proper fabric was certainly one of our more demanding – and time-consuming – challenges. With the first prototype from our manufacturer, the athletic, polyester, breathable fabric was perfect.

However, the 100% cotton dress shirt “upper bib” was not the polished look and feel we desired,” says Dilts.

The COLLAR UP brand is based on comfort, fit, profile and breathability so the team felt they could not cut corners on choosing the cotton or rushing the process as to not sacrifice the quality of the product. Partner and co-owner Gail Spence’s expertise as an amateur seamstress played a large role in the design of the aesthetic, functionality and construction of the shirt.

Currently, the shirt is targeted toward the male audience. Not only does it travel well, but Dilts says it also makes the wearer look 5-10 pounds slimmer due to the lack of bunching at the waist- something both males and females can appreciate. While Larger wears a size medium COLLAR UP shirt under a sweater and it fits her well, she says they do hope to expand the brand in the future to feature a selection for women as well. Prices range from $38-42. “We have an off-the-wall product. And we are not changing the world,” Dilts says of COLLAR UP. “But we do believe in our shirts. And if you buy one, we think you’ll believe in them, too.”
