Haircut, Color and Botox, OH YES!

Haircut, Color and Botox, OH YES!

In the early days of Botox and cosmetic fillers, a woman would discretely visit her plastic surgeon’s office, indulge in the procedure of her choice and hide out in her home as if under house arrest. A few days later, she’d re-enter society looking fresh faced as if she just returned from a weekend’s holiday, none of her contemporaries the wiser. Nowadays, for the most part, this couldn’t be further from reality.

Picture a casual evening out in an elegant salon, complete with a cheese platter and your favorite girlfriends. Add in a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, and you have yourself a Botox Event. No longer relegated to a hush hush private appointment, these events actually celebrate women’s awareness of looking and feeling their best at any age.

Amanda Kelly, owner of the downtown-based Amanda Kelly Salon, a longtime proponent of Botox and cosmetic fillers, found herself in a unique position. After years of recommending the procedures to her clients, she approached the physicians in her personal rolodex with the idea of merging the world of cosmetic procedures with her salon. “I find my clients enjoy the support of having their girlfriends with them, especially if they’ve never had Botox or fillers before,” says Kelly, adding that clients love the extra perks she provides beyond her regular salon services.

Kelly stages these events with two local physicians, Dr. Bret Bruder,M.D., an Emergency Physician of the Rejuve Cosmetic and Wellness Center, and Dr. Lawrence Kurtzman, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Kurtzman Plastic Surgery. Dr. Kurtzman is the only Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in the Tri-State area certified as a national trainer/educator for physicians in the proper use of Botox, Juvederm and Sculptra, which are injectable wrinkle fillers, as well as Latisse, the first and only FDA-approved treatment for inadequate eyelashes.

Dr. Kurtzman has done these events at other salons in the area as well, and stresses that these are not “parties,” simply a more relaxed, convivial setting for some than perhaps a doctor’s office might be. There is never any drinking of alcohol allowed, and the procedures are performed exactly as they would be in Dr. Kurtzman’s office.

Dr. Kurtzman says men show up at these events as well. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise, as, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, from 2000 and 2010, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures among men increased 45 percent. It makes sense. Who among us hasn’t had a gentleman seated next to us in the salon while we were getting our hair done, or enjoying a mani/pedi?

Perhaps you’re thinking this is the ideal way to gather a group of your gal pals right before your next high school reunion to spruce yourselves up a bit. Groups are always welcome to stage their own events at Kurtzman’s Kenwood office, for either Botox or fillers, or any other skin services offered.

So, ladies, we no longer have to hide our skin care regimens for fear of being judged. Our beauty secrets need no longer be hidden away and laughed off as good genes. For centuries, women have relied on their trustworthy girlfriends for information and support, and these evenings provide a comfortable and social atmosphere to feel beautiful, inside and out.

The next Botox Event at Amanda Kelly Salon will be held on May 12 from 5-8 p.m. with Dr. Bret Bruder, M.D. For more information, visit the Amanda Kelly Salon online at To learn more about Dr. Lawrence Kurtzman, visit
