Putting the “You” in Your House

Putting the “You” in Your House

All right ladies, we all know how hectic and crazy our lives get. Walking into a boring, lax-luxury home from a long hard day at work is absolutely no fun. Don’t we deserve more than that? Of course we do!

Here are some tips to help make your home, and your home away from home that your work has become (because that’s how it can feel), more inviting and relaxing while you satisfy your fashionable side!

First thing’s first: lighting is key to brightening up a blah home. If it’s important to figure in lighting when we get our outfits together, it’s even more important for our homes. Each room should be lit to fit the mood you want for each particular room. Click here for a litany of lighting tips from Lowes (say that 10 times fast!). There are so many different light bulbs to choose from today, so be prepared to shop. Light bulbs between 60 and 100 watts will brighten up any room. But be sure to purchase eco-friendly bulbs so you help the environment while you save on your electric bill, putting extra cash in your chic purse.

0708DEGROOT_FASHION.gif If you own your home or even if you are still renting, a fresh coat of paint always brightens up your home a bit. If you rent, check with your landlord to be sure of what colors are permitted before painting.

Pick a color, character or hobby theme for each room before beginning. If you have an extra room or office that isn’t being used, turn it into your sanctuary. Paint it and decorate it according to a place you would like to relax. Personally, I would like to be on a beautiful white beach with glistening turquoise water and tropical plants and flowers — and maybe a cabana boy! To create that atmosphere, start by choosing a nice light blue paint for one of the walls. Get some pictures of ocean views, maybe some faux-bamboo blinds and a small palm tree. Don’t forget about your comfy lounge chair. Now, about that cabana boy…

You can even make your bedroom very chic and cozy. Decorate it with accents and accessories that 0208GIBBERMAN.gifinspire you to be calm and relaxed. You deserve it! And to make it your own, try to find items that mean something to you. For example, instead of filling that new oversized vase with store-bought pebbles, get the pebbles from your parents home where you grew up. That way, every time you look at the vase on your mantle, you remember those summers as a four-year-old making mud pies with pebble frosting.

Lighting and painting are two simple ways to help make your home your own. If you are trying to make a bigger difference in your home or planning a mission to make your place sensational, try upgrading light fixtures, door knobs and water facets. These small changes give your place a little facelift without doing a complete overhaul.

Bring some added spunk to your decor. Throw rugs, funky artistic pictures and plants are all great additions! Places such as Mica and Metronation downtown in the Gateway Quarter, as well as Target, Macy’s, Pier 1 Imports, Anthropologie, Ethan Allen and IKEA offer affordable choices to chic up your home. Explore all your interests and you can make your home extra stylish and all you!
