Holiday Hair-Do How-To

Holiday Hair-Do How-To

When getting ready for a holiday party, we as women, spend a lot of time searching for the “perfect outfit” while forgetting about one of the most important elements of our overall look – our hair.

The way your hair is styled can make or break your overall holiday look. It is important to think about how you want to wear your hair when choosing the outfit you plan to wear to your event. If you don’t like the way your hair looks in an updo, don’t choose an outfit that will look better with your hair up and vice versa.
As a hairstylist, I would of course recommend that you visit your stylist on the day of the event and have an expert style your hair for you. This will alleviate stress from your day and make getting ready a relaxing time for you. However, if your event is on a day that your stylist is not working or you prefer to style your own, there are a few simple styles that you can do at home that will steal the show from the dropping ball.
If you want to wear you hair in an updo, I would suggest starting by blow drying your hair straight and then pulling it back in a low ponytail. You can leave a few strands out around the face if you like or you can pull it all back if you don’t like hair down around your face. From this starting point, there are many styles that you can choose to wear. If you want a sleek look, keep the low pony and then take a piece of hair from the pony and wrap it around the elastic holder and bobby pin it in place underneath the ponytail. This look works great on everyone and is very simple to do at home.

You could also take the hair you have pulled back and wrap it around the elastic band and pin it to make a sleek bun at the nape of your neck. If you curl the hair you have pulled back and wrap it around in a bun and pin it loosely around the elastic you can create an easy updo that looks like you spent several hours creating it. Just remember if you do this style don’t try to make it too perfect; it looks better if there are a few hair strands that are loosely falling away from the bun.

One look that I personally love and that is so easy to do is to wear you hair down and curl it all over. This works well for almost all hair lengths except super short hair. You can use a large barrel curling iron and spiral curl your hair all over for a beautiful curly look or you can use hot rollers to create a bit more of a wavy look. Also, if you are wearing a more modern-looking black dress then super straight hair will work for you. This is easy to achieve with a flat iron. Just remember to keep a bit of height in the crown area of your hair to give it a sexy look. A Root Lifter product will help.

For short hair, try to get as close to the scalp as possible. Be very careful that you don't touch the scalp with the iron. Lots of stylists position a comb between the scalp and the iron just to be safe.

If you decide to do your hair at home, practice prior to the big day so unexpected hair problems don't make you unfashionably late to your soiree. Also, make sure to use plenty of hairspray so your hair won’t fall down mid-party. In fact, I suggest packing a travel-size hairspray in your handbag.

Whatever look you decide to wear, make sure that you are comfortable in it. If you feel good, you will look good and others will take notice.
