Book-Worth Beauty

We’ve all been there before. In your salon’s lobby, anxiously awaiting your hair appointment, feverishly searching through hairstyle books and magazines for the perfect look.

Salons from all over the world vie to get in those publications. One local business has succeeded in doing so – not only once, but several times. Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa has been featured in numerous hair books and magazines. They were also recognized twice as one of the Top 200 Salons in the country by Salon Today.

Vivian Moore, Managing VP of Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa, says, "[Being recognized in] Salon Today, one of the industry ‘bibles,’ is like getting an Oscar twice." Salon Today honored Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa in the categories of: technology, recruitment and training, advanced education and marketing.

Salon Today has also featured Deborah Schmidt, owner and founder of Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa, on the front cover. In addition, Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa has been featured on the cover of Hairstyles & Beauty and HairStyle Showcase. Moore says, "I am most proud of our cover features. Seeing our work showcased on the front of an industry-leading publication is truly a special feeling."

For our readers who may not be familiar with these hair books and magazines, there are two types. First, there are the Beauty/Fashion/Hair Style publications created for the general pubic to inform and inspire women. Moore says, "Changing your cut or color can be nerve-wracking, these magazines help guide you through the best cuts for your face shape and the best color tones for your complexion. Doing a little research before your big change will hopefully ease the butterflies when you come in for your appointment." The second type is Beauty/Fashion/Hair Style/Business publications, or "trade publications." They are used by individuals employed in these fields to help gain inspiration and knowledge about the latest styles and techniques.

In fact, publications often seek out Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa to submit content. Moore says, "Many times I am contacted with a specific request for photos appropriate for upcoming story ideas by the writers who are familiar with my work and Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa’s reputation."

Instead of holding a photo shoot for each individual request or content submission, they schedule a 2-3 day shoot every 1-2 years with the objective of having enough content on file for any future request. Moore says, "When preparing for a shoot, the concept is a result of what is currently happening in addition to the ‘Collections’ [Cut/Color/Styles] I create to represent what Mitchell’s and Pump will present as our own trends," says Moore. "This maintains our role as trend setters, not followers."

Moore says she’s proud to attach "Cincinnati, Ohio" to photographer, model agency, and wardrobe stylist credits to work representing their salon. Deborah Schmidt, owner/founder, has always had a personal goal of getting Cincinnati talent the attention it deserves. As for the latest publication Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa will be featured in, will be in the November issue of Modern Salon or LaunchPad. Moore will be featured in a story about women who have had a significant impact on the Professional Salon Industry.
