Cincinnati CryoSpa opened in February 2014 and offers Whole Body Cryotherapy to ease aches and pains

Whether you suffer from insomnia, muscle and joint pain, or being overweight, “cold therapy” may be your perfect solution.

Cold therapy treatment, also known as Whole Body Cryotherapy, was specifically conceptualized for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that affects the joints. Not only does it help with the joints, it has been discovered that the therapy helps with overall symptom improvement from pain and soreness in injured or affected areas.

While cold therapy treatment has been offered in Europe and Japan for 20 years, it recently made its way to the Tri-State with the opening of Cincinnati CryoSpa in February 2014.

The goal of Cincinnati CryoSpa is to provide the Tri-State residents with an innovative, holistic therapy approach to find relief from chronic aliments, including; aids in weight loss, boosts metabolism, improves athletic performance, etc.,” says co-owner Chris Parsons.

But how does it work exactly? According to Parsons Cryotherapy uses the gaseous form of nitrogen to lower the skin surface temperature from normal body temperature to 30 degrees Fahrenheit in 30 seconds or less and keeps it that way for 2-3 minutes. “As the Cryochamber exposes the skin to ice cold temperatures, the body goes into ‘survival mode’ and blood rushes to the core to keep the internal organs working,” Parsons explains. “There, the blood is enriched with oxygen and nutrients as the body works in super-amped, survival mode. Following the 2-3 minute treatment, as soon as the body is exposed to room temperature, the oxygenated blood rushes back out of the organs, flooding the peripheral tissues and flushing out toxins.”

The benefits of cryotherapy aren’t just internal. The brief “freeze” also activates collagen in the skin, which improves the elasticity and tone of the skin. The constriction of blood vessels followed by the post-procedure Cryochamber flushing also flushes out toxins and helps with chronic skin conditions.

Currently, Cincinnati CryoSpa only offers the Whole Body Cryotherapy, “but we have something in the works for the future,” Parson hints, adding that they will soon offer Local Cryotherapy. “This therapy has the same concept as the Whole Body Cryotherapy but it will focus on a specific area such as a knee, ankle, etc.,” Parsons explains.
