If your dog dreads going to the groomer, they haven’t met the experts at Kayla’s Posh Pets yet.
“We have three professional groomers with lots of experience in dog and cat grooming,” says Vicki Gump, who co-owns Kayla’s Posh Pets with daughter Kayla Bush. Plus, they also feature a boutique which carries pet apparel, toys, treats, hand decorated pet themed picture frames, treat jars and handmade jewelry – a hobby for the Kayla’s Posh Pets family.
With the help of friends and family, Gump and Bush worked for two months to transform an old dingy printing shop to the classy, clean, welcoming facility it is today. They opened their doors the last week of February 2013.
Since 1984, Gump was part-owner of the family owned business, Animal Ark Pet Resort in Mt. Healthy. Having grown up in the family business, at the age of three Bush started giving out dog biscuits to the dogs boarding at Animal Ark and worked her way up through the business to Receptionist, Tiny Paws Daycare Director and Kennel Manager. Kayla began her grooming career by grooming Schnauzers in need of adoption for an area rescue. Vicki then taught Kayla the fine art of grooming all breeds and soon they were talking about opening a shop together.
In October 2012, Gump and Bush attended a workshop held by the National Association of Professional Creative Groomers – an organization that educates creative groomers on proper skin/coat care, safe products and the latest trends in the grooming industry.
“We learned about new ways to polish off their client’s pets with color, flower bows, feather extensions, as well as adding nail painting and nail wraps,” says Gump. “We understand the importance of continuing their education and plan to add sugar and salt scrubs to their list of services in the near future.”
According to Gump, Kayla’s Posh Pets is an innovative yet inviting atmosphere. And word is spreading. “We get a lot of compliments of how soft, clean and fresh smelling their pets stay for weeks after being groomed at our facility,” she explains. “Through word of mouth and customer referrals, Kayla’s Posh Pets has acquired 375 customers in the six short months we have been open.”
Kayla’s Posh Pets offers the experience from three generations of groomers, Gump says. One in particular, Mary Feltner, came out of retirement to groom with them. “Mary started grooming in 1980,” explains Gump, “owned a business and later groomed at Bee’s Canine Design in Montgomery, Sycamore Animal Hospital and Hamilton Avenue Animal Hospital while finishing her career with 11 years at Animal Ark.”
So what’s new on the horizon for Kayla’s Posh Pets? They hope to build their feline clientele, Gump says. “Kayla attended the National Cat Groomers Institute of America located in South Carolina this past August and is now the 9th Certified Feline Master Groomer in the state of Ohio,” she adds.
“She also has earned bragging rights as 122 in the United States and 162 in the world, Gump says. “We hope to continue to build our services, offer fresh ideas to the pets and their families in the Montgomery as well as surrounding areas for many years to come.”
