I am so excited to be a part of Cincy Chic’s “Honoring the Mothers in our Life” theme for this week. When I think of honoring my mother, anyone who is a mom, and the ways I feel my own children honor me, there is so much to be said about the importance of health and fitness. You see, I believe one of the best ways you can honor someone is to be a great role model for them.

My mother was always an exceptional role model to me. When I was growing up, there was not such a huge emphasis on fitness as there is today. My mother did not necessarily push me to workout in the true sense of what “working out” means to me now, but she did encourage physical activity to my butt off the couch! I was a very active child and teenager and spent many hours riding my bike, water skiing, and running around the neighborhood playing with my friends.

Both of my parents limited the amount of TV I was allowed to watch and the length of time I could play video games. And now, knowing what I know now, I can’t thank my mom and dad enough for that!

Today, I do my best to encourage my own children AND my mother (ok you too, dad!) to hold health and fitness as a top priority in their life. I am pretty sure my children are sick of my “preaching” to them by now. I even get eye rolled from my 8-year-old when I often answer, “yes” to the question, “Is this organic”?

But regardless of the amount of rolling eyes I get, my family knows how important health and fitness is to me and they honor me by not giving me too much crap about “promoting” it constantly! The top three things I try to instill in my children and my mother is:
1. Exercise or do physical activity six days a week.
2. Eat “clean” 5-6 days a week. That means no fast food!
3. Get regular check ups to stay on top of what’s going on with your body.

The definition of role model is “a person whose behavior in a particular role is imitated by others.” Are you that person for the mother in your life? Or maybe your mother is that person for you. What role do you play in keeping your loved ones fit? Are you a good role model?

This topic, and Mother’s Day in general, is so important to me that I want to give you a special offer: Bring in your mother or daughter to Keep It Tight Fitness during the month of May and receive 1 week of unlimited classes! Pass along the amazing gift of health and fitness to those who mean the most to you. Happy Mother’s Day from all of the trainers here at KITF!

Shoes are important in every woman’s life. I always love Fabushoe Friday when everyone posts pictures of their favorite wedges, platforms and sandals!

It’s funny because I live in gym shoes! So, sometimes I post pics of the latest and greatest gym shoes that I have. I always get so excited on “date night” when I get all dolled up and trade in my sneakers for some sexy shoes!

But enough of that! I want to talk to you about the importance of having workout shoes that fit right and give your feet the support they need. There are several great places in Cincinnati to get fitted for the perfect shoe for your needs.

Last year, I was introduced to the wonderful people at Fleet Feet in Blue Ash and I was amazed at all that what went into my fitting. They actually videotaped me running on a treadmill!

I got a good laugh when I simply asked the sales rep, “do these come in pink?” To which he replied, “color is not important.” I beg to differ! But with my focus on shoe aesthetics, and his on fit and personalized performance levels, I walked out with two pair of shoes and very happy feet!

It’s important to consider all of the above factors when choosing the right athletic shoe for you. I get ladies in my gym all the time complaining of shin splints and sore feet. And I always coach them on the importance of well-fitted shoes (and a well fitted sports bra, but that’s a whole other story).

I highly recommend taking the time to get properly fitted for your workout shoes. You’ll not only get a better workout, but your tootsies will look much prettier when it comes time to bare them in open-toe shoes!

I consider May the start of bikini season. It’s almost March, so that means we have two months before bikini season is officially here! Are you ready? Are you fit and fabulous? OR are you still saying to yourself: "I need to get to the gym?"

Getting fit for "a season" is a trend that you need to stop this year. Fitness should be a lifelong commitment. It’s about way more than weight loss or fitting into a specific size. It’s about health, energy levels and self-confidence!

I want to give you few great tips to help you get on track and get your booty in shape. First, it always helps keep you accountable by having a few fitness buddies. And by fitness buddies, I mean friends that will work out with you and keep you accountable to the fitness goals you have set.

Second, always keep a gym bag packed and ready to go. I get ladies e-mailing me saying that they won’t make it to class because they forgot their shoes or sports bra. Don’t let this happen to you. Be prepared at all times!

Third, let your family know how important your commitment to fitness is to you. Tell them you really would appreciate their support.

Lastly, (and my favorite) schedule an appointment with a trainer at Keep It Tight Fitness to discuss your goals, frustrations, bad habits, etc. and let’s set up a no-fail plan for you to make some lifelong changes.

I realize making a commitment can sometimes be scary. No matter what the commitment is, it takes dedication to stick to a plan and be successful at it. You do not have to do it alone. We are here to walk you through each and every step to ensure you have the tools you need to win.

Diet accounts for 80 percent of your success with any fitness/health plan. At Keep It Tight we offer nutrition coaching so you can fill in the missing piece of the puzzle that most gyms simply do not focus on.

Lacking motivation? The hardest part is just walking through our door. So many ladies say that for literally months they were "planning" on coming to our gym. They were trying to get in shape first or felt intimidated.

You will see as soon as you meet my trainers and myself that there is no need for fear. The atmosphere here is warm and welcoming. Women come here to get serious about their health and fitness. You belong here.

Make your new spring fitness trend to get that fit body you’ve always wanted. The time is now.

Let’s face it, ladies, while it’s cold now, spring is just around the corner. Soon you will be walking through the mall and seeing all of the new bikinis and short shorts.

If you are like most women, you may have gained five or 10 pounds over the holidays. I know the feeling of being out of shape and covering up that new swimsuit with a towel, but you shouldn’t have to try to hide those pounds at the pool. It’s not too late to do something about it. You can have that lean, sexy body that you deserve, but you need to start now!

My name is Melissa Matson, and I am the owner of Keep It Tight Fitness (KITF) here in Cincinnati. I love to help women regain control of their lives and capture the dreams that they thought were lost forever — dreams of having confidence, energy, passion and feeling sexy!

I am a full-time business owner, wife and mother of six. When I started KITF, my dream was to help women just like me who felt that their lives were too busy to take care of themselves because they were too busy taking care of everyone else. Some of the women I train work out regularly and are looking for that edge to challenge them further while others feel stuck and are facing unwanted weight and shattered self-confidence.

My vision for this women’s-only fitness facility was to give women a fabulous place to work out away from stresses of children and macho gym prowlers — a place that you can come to be inspired, challenged and educated.

If you are like most women, you have tried gym memberships, fad diets and miracle pills. The plain truth is that none of these strategies create long-term results, and it is not your fault. In my weekly column, I will be revealing the little known secrets and strategies that you will need to take back control of your life.

Think of a time when you loved your body, felt great in your clothes and had confidence to spare. How far back do you have to go? Was it before you had children, when you got married, or were you in college or high school? No matter how far back you have to go in your memory, you can achieve that same feeling again.

Here at KITF we can help you reach your fitness goals and coach you on how to finally eat the way you should. It’s not about dieting. It’s about a life-long lifestyle change. It should be simple, right? Eat less and move more. But we can’t do it on our own. It’s about community and support. It’s about a sisterhood that you need to have in your life.

So follow my lead to get your body back and throw in the towel to show off your sexy self.
