12.11.07 Quote of the day – Excuse me while I go off

“A Rattlesnake, if cornered will become so angry it will bite itself. That is exactly what the harboring of hate and resentment against others is – a biting of oneself. We think we are harming others in holding these spites and hates, but the deeper harm is to ourselves.” ~E. Stanley Jones

——-

Today’s quote has a special dedication: Maureen Jacob, a dear friend of mine. What I love about her is that she’s passionate about what she believes in, and wants to share her knowledge with everyone. But she also respects others’ beliefs. I’m writing this because someone was extremely ignorant and spiteful to her, and I think we all can learn from her recent experience.

First off…I’m not a vegetarian, nor will I ever wear a fur coat. I believe in a food chain, but I don’t believe in violence. (Not that you asked) But the point is that I can have these beliefs. My friend Maureen never tossed the chicken fingers I ordered and ate in front of her. I know her beliefs and she knows mine. I didn’t order that meal out of spite. I did it because I was hungry, and that’s what I would have ordered regardless of Maureen’s presence. I didn’t tell her that the chicken I was eating was solely being eaten because she believed what she believed.

It boils my blood to think that someone would go out and do something against another’s beliefs for the mere fact of doing it in SPITE.

See below to read the communications that recently transpired between Maureen and an aquaintence. (You’ll need to start from the very bottom).

The thing is that XYZ (name changed to protect privacy) had a point for believing what she believed. She had cancer, and wouldn’t have been cured if not for her animal-tested chemo. But, in my opinion, she crossed a line to say Maureen’s beliefs and effort to reach out to someone that may not have been educated about fur alternatives pushed her to actually buy the real fur – whereas she might not have otherwise.

I encourage everyone reading this to stand up for what you believe in. Share those beliefs with others. But never let spite or hateful actions towards someone different then you taint that delicate balance.

On that note, please feel free to share your beliefs on this subject by commenting below. Remember, you can stand up for what you believe in without standing on anyone’s toes. (I just made that up by the way!)

Amy

i’m sorry but i am deleting you from my friends. no hard feelings but i cannot agree with your views on furs/leather/animal testing and i don’t care to see this in my bulletins. i will never agree with you. every person who messaged me back supported my views.

if it wasn’t for animal testing then i probably wouldn’t survived my cancer 1 1/2 years ago. think of all of the children with aids and cancer who are suffering, they need cures and without animals we won’t be able to help them. unfortunately human life is superior. i’d rather a rat die then someone’s 5 year old son.

i know you believe in a nonviolent world but it’s never going to happen! there has to be sacerfice for medical research plus there has been violence amongst people, animal killing for food and clothing from the begining of time.

i do love animals and am against senseless abuse but i don’t think it’s senseless to kill an animal for warmth or food.

sorry but i choose my battles carefully and i choose not to get caught up in this issue anymore. i’m sooo over it! i’m not going to change and the fact you pushed your views on me in this way makes me want a fur coat even more.

thanks for helping me decide to purchase one for real. just think if you didn’t inverviened i would have just changed my status update the next day to something else and would have forgotten about the coat. the funny thing is that it meant nothing to begin with other than i was COLD and i never specified whether i wanted a real or fake either. you need to look before you leap in life! i’ll pray for you. pretty sure GOD still loves me.

Buying real animal fur is not just about owning a luxurious garment, but comes with a history of pain, torture, and unbelievable cruelty.

The fur ads you might see in magazines and commercials portray fur coats as a symbol of elegance. But these ads fail to show how the original owners of these coats met their gruesome deaths.

Millions of fur-bearing animals including foxes, raccoons, minks, coyotes, bobcats, lynxes, opossums, nutria, beavers, muskrats, otters, and others are killed each year on fur farms by anal and vaginal electrocution and in the wild by drowning, trapping, or beating.

Ranch-raised foxes are kept in cages only 2.5 feet square (minks in cages 1-foot-by-3-feet), with up to four animals per cage.

Animals can languish in traps for days. Up to 1 out of every 4 trapped animals escapes by chewing off his or her own feet, only to die later from blood loss, fever, gangrene, or predation.

Every year, thousands of dogs, cats, raptors, and other so-called “trash” animals (including endangered species like the bald eagle) are crippled or killed by traps.

To kill the animals without damaging their fur, trappers usually strangle, beat, or stomp them to death. Animals on fur farms may be gassed, electrocuted, poisoned with strychnine, or have their necks snapped. These methods are not 100 percent effective and some animals “wake up” while being skinned. Most of the time, animals are skinned alive for their furs.

There are so many great alternatives to fur out there.

If you have any questions or would like to learn info about why wearing fur is bad, visit this site or please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Peace to all living things,
Maureen

Once again, I didn’t mean to ruin your day or anything like that. But why would just a simple message from me have such an affect XYZ?

i’m really not interested in going back and forth with you on this. i came in from the bengals game cold and wet and i made a comment about wanting a fur coat because i WAS COLD and WET and fur coats are typically very WARM. i was having a great day thanks for ruining it.

As an animal rights activist, I am appreciate the work that PETA has done for animals, but I don’t agree with everything they do.

I believe in promoting nonviolence, in a nonviolent way.

Ironically, you seem to fail to realize that capitalism also has everyone brain washed. As long as it brings in the money, they don’t care about anyone, human or animal.

ok, so i’ve been messaged by “animal rights activists” in the last half hour so i felt like i needed to post this….

yes, my status says “XYZ wants a fur coat”. it’s because i do, it’s flipping cold outside. if you believe in animal rights and all of that crap do not message my about how wrong this is. animals have been on this planet from day one to keep humans warm and fed. i am not interested on your views so don’t waste your time – i will eat meat and wear fur (if i ever buy any)and carry my red leather gucci bag until the end of time. if you don’t like it then delete me. and by the way this is myspace get real!!!!

peta has everyone brain washed, they care about animals but have no respect for human life or the treatment of humans. look at how they act in public, throwing pies in peoples faces, attacking scientists who save human lives, setting fires where firefighters have DIED putting out flames. these people are dangerous and have twisted agenda’s. if you care so much for animals then go live in a jungle and see how fast they bite your head off.

peace out!

I honestly did not mean to offend or push my beliefs on you at all XYZ. I just wanted to share information about the subject.

You have the right to do/say/write whatever you believe and want…I was just hoping that you would show some compassion in your choices.

And I do believe in rights for all beings, including humans; I have worked and written on behalf of both causes. I just believe exercising a nonviolent existence for all living creatures. Just because we are “above” animals doesn’t mean that we should abuse them.

seriously? i couldn’t imagine pushing my beliefs on a person in this way. it’s myspace and i cold if i want to say i want a fur coat i can. it’s not my fault animals are used for food and warmth and it’s not my fault we are simply above them on the food chain. i wish that people would stand up for human rights like they do animals.

XYZ, I hope you will find it in your heart to reconsider getting or receiving a real fur coat.
