Inspired by her love for baking and modern art, cake designer, Sarah Anthony launched Sugar Fashion Cakes, a bakery that offers custom cakes with a touch of fashion. Sugar Fashion Cakes located in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, creates cakes, ranging from $35 to $1,200, for any special occasion using unique sculpting techniques, often with fondant and gum paste, and Anthony’s own secret recipe buttercream icing.
“I wanted my store to be known for the beautiful cakes we create. I didn’t want to open a regular bakery so I decided to name it exactly what it is. Sugar Fashion…Cakes!” Anthony explains. “I came up with the concept for Sugar Fashion Cakes 10 years ago and started my own business plan. Two years ago I found the store that I currently own in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.”
Influenced by her grandmother, Anthony’s interest in art and baking began at a very young age. “My grandma was my art and baking inspiration,” Anthony recalls. “She taught art in elementary school and we baked together when I was young.”
Anthony pursued her love for art as she earned her Associate Degree in computer graphic design. “Before I started the cake business, I designed travel brochures for Carlson Wagonlit Travel and I also designed checks for Harland Clarke,” says Anthony. “I decided cakes are much more fun and put my business plan into action.”
Anthony launched Sugar Fashion Cakes nearly two years ago creating the logo, promotional materials, t-shirts and cake designs all on her own. “I designed t-shirts that our customers love saying, such as: ‘Cupcakes Make Everything Better,’ ‘OCD: Obsessive Cupcake Disorder,’ and ‘My Cupcakes Bring All the Boys to the Yard,'” Anthony laughs.
Sugar Fashion Cakes operates using two cake decorators, Anthony and her husband, Mike. Anthony says this is one of the biggest reasons her bakery is so unique. “Each of us has a different sculpting technique,” she explains. “I specialize in cartoonish sculpting and my husband sculpts realistic items when we need them. Each cake is unique and different in its own way. We don’t like to duplicate cakes.”
Anthony claims her and her husband’s sculpting techniques are so unique that they now offer classes for those wanting to learn his techniques for making and decorating cakes. “We offer hands-on classes to anyone who wants to learn,” she explains. “We also do parties where attendees learn decorating techniques.”
Since the opening of Sugar Fashion Cakes, Anthony is proud of the loyal clientele they’re building. “Our customers love how friendly we are and that we treat each cake order like it is for our own family members,” Anthony says. “We take great pride in everything we bake and decorate for our customers.”
Anthony says she also loves to give back to their loyal fans by holding monthly customer appreciation contests, in which the customers guess the bakery’s mystery cupcake of the day for a chance to win cupcakes. “We also have our cupcake booth at local festivals and Sugar Fashion Cakes host Elizabethtown Zombie Fest every second Saturday of October to raise money for the Elizabethtown Heritage Council,” Anthony adds.
Through the community’s support and her hard work, Anthony hopes she will be able to eventually offer cake decorating supplies as well as custom cakes to her customers and sell her buttercream icing in stores.
