Our new wedding columnist shares her top tips for picking out the perfect dress for your the big day.

Shopping for your wedding gown can be so exciting and can be so exhausting at the same time. Here are a few tips to help you navigate your wedding gown shopping excursions.

Yay! You found the love of your life and he just put a ring on it! It’s the day that you have dreamed of your entire life. You already have your Pinterest page full of inspiration and you are ready to go shopping!

Where do you start? Who do you take with you? How much do you want to spend on one gown for just one night? All of these thoughts are running through your head as you are mentally taking notes on what your best friend just wore in her wedding.

Here are a few tips from yours truly, who has worked with thousands of brides find their dream wedding gowns for the most important day of their lives.

1.) Know your Budget! When you are shopping for your gown, your bridal consultant will tactfully bring up how much you want to spend on your gown. Please BE HONEST! If you only want to spend $800, please tell your consultant. More often than not, you will have some options in your price range. If you have an average budget of $1,500-$3,000, you will have many options in most boutiques and can more than likely find the gown of your dreams.

2.) Only bring your most trusting friends/family to shop with you. You watch the TV reality shows with the brides and her 20 girlfriends shopping for her wedding gown. How often does that bride end up in tears? This is not how you want to spend your day shopping for your wedding gown! By limiting the number of people shopping with you, you will be able to enjoy your day and you will feel like you made the decision yourself. Having so many opinions will only confuse you. The best advice is to find your gown with 2 to 3 of your closest people, and then have your girlfriends come with you when you pick up your gown when it arrives in the boutique. It can still be fun and exciting with popping the champagne, but without the added stress of having to make the ultimate decision on your gown.

3.) Have inspiration photos of the gowns that you are obsessing over for your wedding. We know you have your secret Pinterest Board full of wedding ideas. This is the time to make it public and share it with your bridal consultant! It is incredibly helpful to share photos of wedding gowns that you may envision wearing on your big day. Choose gowns of all silhouettes. You may think you can’t wear a fit to flare gown, when in fact, it may be the best silhouette for your body type.

4.) Trust your bridal consultant! Your bridal consultant is highly trained in helping brides find their perfect gown for their wedding day. More often than not, the bridal consultant will pull a gown that you never thought you could wear, and it will be “The One!”

5.) Pull the trigger! When you see yourself in the mirror, and you are getting that feeling in your stomach that this is The One, then just “Say Yes to the Dress!” You will know when it is your gown! When you know, then STOP SHOPPING! So often, we see brides who know it’s there gown, but they continue to shop, and shop, and shop, only to find themselves coming back for that gown they can’t stop thinking about. Make it easy on yourself and your bridal party and pull the trigger as soon as you know it’s The One!

By remembering these few tips on wedding gown shopping, you will have one of the most memorable experiences of your life! Happy Shopping!
