Blossoming New Spring Trends

As this winter continues to be one for the record books, we decided to instead turn our focus (and wishful thinking) to Spring lookbooks! So, we chatted with Courtney PeGan, owner of Hyde Park Square-based Curate Boutique, hot off the heels of a buying trip in Vegas to learn which Spring trends will soon replace the snow.

According to PeGan, florals, metallics, Sporty Chic, message tees, midi skirts, cropped tops, shorts, orchid hues and black and white are the Spring trends to keep on your ravishing radar.

“Floral prints always seem to pop up in the Spring,” says PeGan. “And this year is no exception,” she says, adding that this season’s floral prints are unique because of a bold take on traditional florals. “From three dimensional flower appliqués to bright color combinations, there are so many fun, new ways to wear flowers this season,” she explains.

Emerging out of dark clubs and evening wear, metallics are making their way into daywear drawers everywhere. PeGan says this Spring’s take on metallics make them more wearable during the day by pairing them with other basics for a balanced yet still on-trend look.

If you want to look effortless and cool, try Sporty Chic. This casual trend offers updated, chic varsity-style bomber jackets and jersey-inspired blouses as it takes on your high school gym class wardrobe, PeGan explains.

In addition, she says, you can expect to see tons of printed tees with logos or cheeky messages. “It is one of my favorite trends because who doesn’t love a well-made, cute T-shirt with a little personality,” she laughs.

Midi- (or tea-length) skirts, which hit below the knee and about mid-calf, were all over the runway for this season. PeGan loves the idea of a high-waisted midi-skirt with a cropped sweater or top. She adds that they have a couple of black midi-skirts in stock that you can wear now and through the Spring.

If you thought the phase of crop tops were over, you’re wrong. “Crops are coming in even stronger this season after their introduction last year,” says PeGan. “I see them popping up everywhere from the runway to street style.” Although it can feel intimidating to think of showing off your midriff, PeGan says pairing them with high-waisted skirts or pants is an easy way to take on the trend without revealing too much.

Shorts will always be a Spring trend, PeGan says, and have come a long way since they were only recognized as being informal wear. This season though, PeGan explains, shorts will still come in the classic casual favorites like the jean short, but there will also be new cuts, patterns and fabrics to help you dress up the look.

Radiant orchid was determined to be the 2014 Pantone Color of the Year. So that means you can expect to see it, and various shades of it like lilac, everywhere this Spring. Curate Boutique has a lilac maxi dress that PeGan says would be perfect to wear anywhere from date night to a Spring or Summer wedding – which is perfect with wedding season just around the corner.

As always, black and white is en vouge, but now more than ever. “This staple color combo is perfect whether you want color blocking or funky tribal patterns,” PeGan says. “You can never go wrong with black and white.”

And if you need any help pairing these trends into looks, that’s what Curate Boutique does best, Pegan says. “I love the idea of creating unique, hand selected style collections for shoppers to discover amazing pieces that will elevate their personal style, making them feel beautiful and unique,” she explains.

“Curate Boutique is meant to be a fun destination to play, discover, shop, and own unique, thoughtful styles from up and coming designers. Kind of like going over to your über trendy best friend’s house to search through her closet,” laughs PeGan, “except everything is for sale here!”

If you want to get your own personal preview of the styles from Curate Boutique, check out Cincy Chic’s Fashion in Flight event on March 6 from 6-9pm at CVG.
