Raise your Mind’s Level

Raise your Mind’s Level

Have you reached the end of the year and just feel like you’re stuck in that proverbial and sometimes unavoidable rut? If so, the end of 2007 with 2008 just within our sights is a great opportunity to move toward a positive change in our lives.

One way to change your life that will have beneficial results is to raise your consciousness. To raise one’s consciousness means to become more aware at all levels and in all aspects of your life.

Marion Corbin Mayer, a creative life coach and wellness consultant with Creative Catalysts, says making an effort to raise your consciousness gives you more freedom in how you live your life.

“If you travel through life unaware of your habitual reactions you remain at their mercy,” Mayer says. “Taking the time and making the effort to become more conscious [of how you react to stimulants] allows you the luxury of choice.”

Otherwise, she says, you might react to a situation in a certain way just because it is the same way your family of origin, peer group or political party would react; not necessarily how you yourself feel.

Instead of flying off the behavioral handle, Mayer recommends first taking a deep breath, then pause before responding. “As Thumper’s mother said, ‘If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all,’” Mayer says.

Aside from taking the time to think about what you’re going to say before you say it, another way to raise your level of consciousness is by turning your attention inward by taking the time to reflect, journal or meditate, Mayer recommends.

“Or at least take the time to check in with your intuition,” she says. “If you initiate a daily practice of some sort it helps develop your connection to that still, small voice of wisdom inside us all.”

Your daily practice could be as simple as writing in the suggested journal or taking a moment to light a candle or contemplate on inspirational words you can find in your local bookstore.

Mayer has found The Artist’s Way, a book by Julia Cameron, to be especially helpful in her work as a structure for her personal coaching clients. “I have taught this material since 1997 and I have seen it create miracles in people’s lives,” she says.
