Chic Spotlight: Cotillion Events’ Monica Bermudez
Cincy Chic: How did Cotillion Events come about?
Monica Bermudez, Business Development Manager and Cake Decorator for Cotillion Events: Driven by our “healthy obsession” for cakes, weddings and celebrations; we created Cotillion Events as an opportunity to bring together our passion for baking, our commitment to outstanding customer service and our creative and entrepreneurial spirits. In the search for our true passion, we ran into baking as a way to express how much we care and cherish delighting our friends and family through cake. Whether a wedding, birthday or simply a get together, cakes have been close to our hearts and quickly became iconic, memorable and unforgettable pieces of art that we admired and sincerely valued.
What started as simple as making cakes for small events, family and friends, it quickly turned into contemporary, modern and elegant cake creations that people desired for their special events and celebrations. As word got out about these unique cake creations, we got inundated with cake orders that demanded a more structured business, for which we decided to put together what it is known today as Cotillion Events.
Cincy Chic: What are your plans for the business?
Bermudez: As we continue to strengthen the Cotillion Events business, our credo speaks to our commitment to making your cake the center stage of your events. We redefine the role of cake to transform your celebration into an unforgettable memory.
Cincy Chic: What’s your favorite cake you’ve ever done?
Bermudez: That is a tough question, since every cake we have ever done has a unique story, characters and meaning. However, I would have to say our first wedding cake for Jessica and Dan Engel has a very special place in our hearts. The cake order was for 600 people, 4 tier layer cake, multiple flavors and fillings and tons of sheet cake. The cake was delivered to a small town in Indiana about an hour away from Cincinnati and the couple was a very good friend of ours. The pressure was definitely on! The excitement rush we got from this cake was simply indescribable!
Cincy Chic: What’s the most unusual order you’ve ever received?
Bermudez: Just recently, we have baked very unusual cakes. Anything from hamburgers, ambulances, fire trucks, trains and just a month ago we just got an order to make a “stack of river rocks” for an anniversary cake. We beg our clients to come up with creative challenges for us, so that we can stretch our baking skills. We love challenges and hope to become the next Ace of Cakes!
Cincy Chic: What’s the most memorable birthday order you’ve received?
Bermudez: A plane cake for a 5-year-old. He came with his mom to pick up the cake at our bakery and I will never forget his smile when we showed him his cake! Other than wedding cakes, we love to bake cake for children birthdays, since they always are very imaginative with what they want!
Cincy Chic: When you’re celebrating your own birthday, what kind of cake do you prefer?
Bermudez: I love cookies and cream cake, which is one of our signature flavors. The cake is very moist and the flavor is very rich, and did I mention yummy?
Cincy Chic: What’s the most popular birthday cake flavor/recipe?
Bermudez: Our triple chocolate fudge and raspberry filling is one of our most requested flavors. The cake is to die for!
Cincy Chic: What’s your favorite thing about Cincinnati?
Bermudez: My favorite thing about Cincinnati is its people. Kind, loving, caring and very friendly. I love the feel of a city without the hassles of a big metropolis. Plus, the restaurants are simply great!
