Cincy Chic: You founded Pursenalties On The Go (POTG). What was the motivation for starting the company?
Kristy Landolt: My motivation for creating POTG grew from my love of design. After many years of creating products for other name brands, I knew I could run my own business doing what I love – designing high quality handbags. The idea started as a retail store but it had limitations. Independent consultants who enjoy design and handbags like me now bring our unique product right into homes along with our new, interactive Web site. Our current line has something for everyone. From large, oversized bags to small, evening clutches.
Another great feature that POTG provides is individuality. It’s very rare that we have the same handbag designed twice. With more than 140 fabrics, reversible fabrics and reversible bags, customers can design a bag to really fit their function, need and style.
Cincy Chic: How does POTG work? How does one create her own purse?
Landolt: POTG provides two ways to create a purse. Arrange a party with one of our consultants and invite a few friends over or hold a fundraiser for your favorite charity. Another exciting part of our business is e-commerce. Go online and build a bag! Our new, interactive Web site allows the customer to view their finished, one-of-a-kind purse.
Cincy Chic: What is the life expectancy of a POTG purse?
Landolt: We guarantee our purses for 12 months. Spray the finished bag with a fabric protector and use a mild spot remover when necessary and your bag will last season after season. I dropped one in a mud puddle this year, but I had just sprayed it and the mud wiped away. Many of our fabrics are heavy-duty upholstery fabrics which have a built in stain guard.
Cincy Chic: What’s your favorite purse that you’ve created for POTG for either yourself or a client?
Landolt: There are so many designs to love that it’s difficult to pick a favorite! Each season we add new fabrics, so my favorite bag from last Fall has been replaced with a new favorite this Spring. I use the Nantucket a lot because it is a very versatile size. I own several, and someone always comments on it. I’m fairly conservative, but my inner diva always gets me to put that fun, trendy fabric on the interior of my bags. It seems to catch the eye of other women!
Cincy Chic: What’s your most popular POTG purse request?
Landolt: Our best selling purse is a reversible bag called the Monterey. However, one of our new styles, the Boca, is quickly taking the lead. The Boca is a larger elbow satchel purse with genuine leather handles. Check it out online.
Cincy Chic: What do you do in your free time?
Landolt: Free time? What’s that? Seriously, I do enjoy all kinds of art. Stained glass, pottery and oil painting are my top three stress-reducing hobbies – other than designing purses, of course.
Cincy Chic: Why do you think women love purses so much?
Landolt: I think handbags have recently gone from an afterthought to a well-planned decision and the core of women’s wardrobes. Accessories are more important today than ever before, and the growth within the industry reflects this change. Anyone can get a pair of black pants and a white shirt, but add a belt, some sunglasses and a one-of-a-kind custom purse with a little panache and it’s a completely different statement. I think women want to be noticed for their wardrobe creativity.
Cincy Chic: What’s your favorite thing about Cincinnati?
Landolt: Cincinnati is a great city. I grew up in a small rural town in northern Ohio. We didn’t have the excitement of hosting a major league baseball team or NFL football team. We truly enjoy all this city has to offer. Cincinnati is the perfect size to start a company. No matter if you are an urbanite or suburbanite, our bag styles and fabric selection transcend the individual demographics of Cincinnati women. Our tremendous growth is due to the positive response that we have received from Cincinnati and we appreciate it!
