A Spot for Tea

In 2003, the opportunity to pursue a passion for tea led Kathleen and Katherine Kern, mother and daughter co-founders of Churchill’s Fine Teas, to explore the history and traditions that are said to have begun more than 5,000 years ago.

In 2009, the Kerns moved their location from 4th St. downtown to Findlay Market. Then, in May 2013, Churchill’s Fine Teas announced the opening of a second location after outgrowing its space in Findlay Market.

While the tea side of the business will remain in Findlay Market, carrying more than 250 loose leaf teas from around the world, the new space — called Churchill’s Design-Bazaar — showcases their collection of vintage and rare tea ware, tabletop and decor items.

The Design-Bazaar warehouse and showroom is located at 2023 Dunlap Street. “The Design-Bazaar is only a couple of blocks from the market and perfect for Churchill’s,” Kathleen says. “We invite everyone to explore our stores and site to learn more about the fascinating world of tea.”

They offer tea tastings and programs so you can learn more about the origins and customs of tea – whether you are interested in English Afternoon Tea, the Chinese art of the Gongfu Tea Ceremony, the Japanese Tea Ceremony or what is masala chai.

In fact, starting the day after Thanksgiving Churchill’s Fine Teas will introduce Tea Steins to celebrate German Christmas Market coming to Findlay Market December 6 through December 15. “And we’re celebrating our official 4th Anniversary the day after Thanksgiving,” says Kathleen. “So, we hope everyone can come down, check out the Findlay Market store, and celebrate our four years at the market.”

“We have traveled around the world, experiencing tea traditions first hand, and bring you the finest and freshest loose leaf teas from the world’s best tea gardens. We personally taste all the teas we offer to ensure that they meet our requirements for quality.”

To enhance the ritual of tea, Kathleen says she continually searches for teaware that is both functional and easy to use. “In addition, we offer vintage and rare teaware and bone china tea sets for those special occasions – or simply for treating yourself,” she adds. M”any of our tea sets and accessories are handmade by craftspeople whose skills have been passed down through generations.”
