Everyday Inspiration: First Comes… Me
Dear Magnificent People,
“People worry about everyone being selfishly oriented. If everyone did exactly what they wanted to do, what kind of world with this be? And we say, a really, really good one. Because if everyone did what they wanted to do, everyone would feel free. And if you feel free, you feel empowered. And every negative emotion that exists -hear this-every negative emotion that exist is because there is some sense of loss of freedom somewhere in there.” – Esther Hicks, Abraham
Let’s face it, no matter how practiced we are in knowing that we must put ourselves first, we inevitably get pushed up against some of life’s experiences that have us reeling back into confusion and questioning our belief systems. We sometimes get confused because we’ve been indoctrinated to believe we should be putting other people’s needs ahead of our own. After all, that’s what makes agood human being, or so we are told.
But the whole thought behind this old belief system is flawed. If, in fact, we are supposed to put other people’s needs first ahead of our own, what we are really hearing is that we are responsible for their well-being. This is such dangerous territory. This makes us feel responsible for whatever they do with the information that we give them. This makes us accountable, not the other person.
This is why guilt runs so rampant. This is also why people are unable to do things on their own. They become disempowered, through depending on others to tell them what to do. Or if we do it for them, they learn that they can blame us for what goes wrong. We create victims that don’t own their stuff. They become martyrs of the world: blaming government, society, friends, social systems, anything and everything becomes a target as to why they feel disempowered.
The only way to bring about healthy change is by being the example. When we put our needs first and showed how empowered and free we become, we naturally teach by example. This allows our energy to first and foremost go to the organism that is us. Nurturing and nourishing our needs allows us to find out what we came here for, so we can develop our gifts and abilities and share those with the world. When we are full, we have the potential to live and interact with others from an Overflow state of Being- able to give and be fully present to our lives. Versus putting ourselves after others and feeling depleted, scattered, confused, and resentful.
The human heart takes the oxygen-rich blood it needs FIRST, before it sends it to any other organ. The heart does this unapologetically, knowing that BECAUSE it puts itself first, everything else thrives. If it did not, whatever depended on the heart to function, would go down with it.
The same is true for all of us. We best serve the world and others when we put ourselves first. A thriving, functional, whole human being is the result. This is the only gift the world really needs.
