Everyday Inspiration: Your Journey Is The Destination
Dear Fearless Pilots of Life,
What is fear? A feeling of not being in control, of not knowing what’s ahead for us. A feeling of being uncertain, losing ground, being caught off-guard. Fear keeps you stuck, unable to make decisions, paralyzed. It can cause you to lose ground.
We are like aircraft flying through this thing we call life. We have wings to get off the ground so that we can aim higher and go farther. Though we all have wings, only some of us choose to really use them.
“In a world full of people only some want to fly isn’t that crazy?” – Seal
Most of the time we start and attempt to fly only to turn around and go back to the starting gate, where it feels comfortable and safe. Or we actually get off the ground in flight, but immediately land. And then there are some of us who actually stay in ground effect, which is only dabbling in the air, never really experiencing true flight at all. This will only keep you skimming the ground, while the sky beckons above.
“For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return.” – Leonardo da Vinci
We are Beings primed for flight. We came here to explore, to create, to join the dance of life. If we allow fear to keep us on the ground, we miss out on the greatest experiences that life has to offer. Yes, it’s never easy to find a new job or end a relationship that you know is not good for you.
But you didn’t come here to stay on the ground. You came here to soar, to experience life to its fullest so that you can find out just Who You Are and how far you can go. This is the greatest gift that you will ever give to yourself and the world around you. For that’s what we’ve been waiting for, for you taking flight benefits us all. When you spread your wings and take flight, you become an inspiration!
Can we learn to see fear for what it is? As a chance for respite, a gift that makes us stop, redirect, and find ourselves once again. A chance to get reacquainted with that North Star that is always there to guide us. You can’t always see it unless you aim really high, concentrate, and go to the quiet place that has always been inside you. The place you can tap into like a steady friend. It guides you into the direction you know is right, if only you would listen and not be afraid.
So when you’re flying along, listen to that little voice that calls for you to give up your so-called financial security, to quit your job or write the books you’ve always wanted to write. This is your North Star. Listening may produce some thunder cloud moments, ones you think you can’t survive or make you crash.
Take that fear as a sign you must ask for new Coordinates. Above all, stay strong! Be open to a new course but whatever you do don’t go back!
Many of us falter and we go back to our original gate where it’s comfortable and familiar but also crippling to our growth.
It’s perfectly fine to hold and get new coordinates around the storm, you may even need to get extra help from the tower. Trust that others will respond. A new course will be given to you as long as you don’t allow fear to dominate and cripple your progress. These deviations are all part of the flight plan.
You can request your Flight Plan with a specific route, but ultimately the Flight Plan is issued by the controller. So it is with you. You are the pilot who gets issued a flight plan. Are you willing to fly it or stay stuck at the gate? You can always make the course corrections along the route. For goodness sakes, sit back, relax and enjoy the flight. But Please Just Fly!
You will never know all the turbulence ahead, you can only observe and feel it as it comes through the windows of your journey.
Allow fear to have its place, but for now, you don’t have the whole picture and you never will. It was never your place to have to it all figured out.
“I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.” – Mark Twain
When you get through a storm, you will say, “damn I never knew I had it in me.” In that moment you will see your fear as the gift it was: as a renewal, a purpose, a way to spur you on into your new way of Being. As a way of seeing yourself and what you’ve become, heightening your self worth in your own eyes. As a way to push or force yourself through a portal that will mold you into your magnificence.
At times you may be fearful of where you are going. You may not accomplish something on time or be where you want to be. Focus on the fact that at least you’re in the air flying. At least you’re going somewhere. Don’t fear that you’re not going to like your destination or you’re going to get there late or that you’re too old or inexperienced.
Focus on the fact that you’re moving forward and going somewhere. You don’t have the whole picture and you never will. Life has bigger plans for you than you could ever imagine, IF only you would only allow it to happen.
Your journey is the destination.
Enjoying the journey is the whole point. If you’re not enjoying the ride, then you’re not enjoying your life. Just be happy you’re flying, that you’re up in the air. Focus on the act of flying because the destination will not be revealed until the day you die.
Are you ready?
As you take each step I will be there reminding you of your Magnificence, and I will continue to do so, until you are able to see it in yourself. © Copyright. Jennifer Annenberg Productions. 2013.
