David MacDonald has been a businessman in the Greater Cincinnati area for 50 years, so he’s definitely one for taking risks and it was no surprise when he was dared to offer romantic airplane rides 27 years ago.
In those nearly three decades since MacDonald launched Flamingo Air, his business is still going strong.
“We continue to offer spectacular aerial views of our great city with several different tour options,” he says.
Today, Flamingo Air has become Cincinnati’s a unique airline offering several different “Flightseeing tours” for couples, friends, clients, and families, and is based out of historic Lunken Airport.
The basis behind Flamingo Air is to make it fun to get in an airplane, and that passion for creating fun has turned the company into the global operation it is today.
“In addition to the Flightseeing tours, Flamingo Air offers aircraft dispatcher and avionics technician training through its Airline Ground Schools, drone training through its Worker Bee program, and a pilot certificate program through its Flight School,” says MacDonald.

With educational operations in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, Flamingo Air is all about fun. “If it’s not fun, we don’t do it,” he says. “Where else can you board a professionally-operated aircraft, hassle-free, and enjoy beautiful views of the city’s rolling hills, waterways, and skyline?”
There are a variety of Flightseeing tours available, and tours start at $200 for up to four passengers and go up to $475 for special tours such as the Romantic Adventure.
The Queen City Adventure is a 15- to 20-minute flight and includes a tour of downtown Cincinnati, flying 1,000 feet above the Carew Tower, Great American Ballpark, Paul Brown Stadium, and more.
The King and Queen Adventure tour is a 30- to 40-minute tour that sends you soaring above Kings Island’s highest roller coasters and over downtown Cincinnati.
The Grand Adventure includes up to 60 minutes of flight, and allows you to customize your Flightseeing tour of the river region, including a fly-by over your house.
The Business Adventure includes up to 60 minutes of flight where realtors and property developers can get a bird’s eye view of property and projects.
The Romantic Adventure includes up to 60 minutes and is ideal for date night. “You can even get married in the plane,” says MacDonald. “You choose the flight path and we provide you with a romantic adventure complete with champagne and chocolates.”
Even with nearly 30 years of business under its belt, Flamingo Air continues to do new things. It recently introduced its newest training courses. “One is Avionics Training and Installation, the second is Drone Maintenance, Operation, and Repair,” says MacDonald.
