Julie Niesen Gosdin was early to the blogging party. While most blogs featured in this issue launched a year or two ago, Gosdin’s blog, Wine Me, Dine Me (in Cincinnati) (WMDM), is about to celebrate four blissful years in the local blogosphere.
At the time, there was only one other active food blog in the city. "I felt like I was filling a need. I guess I did!" Gosdin says. And it filled a need for her, too. "I needed a creative outlet and always said, ‘Write what you know,’" she says. "Since I ate out a lot, it seemed like a natural fit."
The blog started as just restaurant reviews, but it’s since transformed into much more. Of course, WMDM still offers fab foodie reviews, but now it also features posts about travel dining, news, discussion and cocktails. "I’m madly in love with mixology, and include recipes any chance I get," she says. "I’ve gotten a lot of interest in my Cocktail Hour posts, but generally people come to me for reviews and news."
It’s not just about the food or drinks with Gosdin, though. It’s about the experience, the personalities that go along with food, and keeping an eye on trends and what’s going on in other cities. "I spend a lot of time outside of Cincinnati which gives me a lot of perspective on food trends elsewhere," she says. "I make it a point to try new, interesting places when I travel."
And even though the food is flavorful and the drinks are delish, Gosdin’s favorite part of writing the blog is interacting with her readers. "I love well thought-out comments, tips from readers, even constructive criticism," she says. "I’ve had so many great conversations about food and Cincinnati because people contact me in some way."
Gosdin says readers can expect to see more travel posts, and a bunch of fun new places to try in the near future. "It’s been a wild ride in four years and I’ve learned so much about Cincinnati in the process," she says. "It’s even more fun to be able to be an advocate for the city and introduce people from all around the world to such an awesome place to live."
