Elysian Place

Cincy Chic: What is Elysian Place LLC?
Jan and Chip Kussmaul, Owners of Elysian Place LLC: Actually, Elysian Place LLC has been our home for over 30 years. It was an old, run down Victorian in desperate need of renovation. With an impressive view in a desirable area, most would have demolished the house and started over with a new structure, but we saw what the house had been, and that with work, it could be again. Today, in addition to being our home, Elysian Place is also a bed and breakfast.

Cincy Chic: What’s the inspiration behind it?
Kussmaul: Chip has been into restoration for his entire life. He has restored houses, cars and furniture. Bringing the past back to life makes the present more meaningful.

Cincy Chic: When did you open Elysian Place?
Kussmaul: While we have lived in this house for over thirty years, Elysian Place LLC bed and breakfast has only been open for guests since the beginning of this year.

Cincy Chic: Can you tell us more about the property?
Kussmaul: This house is centrally-located in the Uptown area. We are in Clifton HEights, within walking distance of the University of Cincinnati. The house was built around 1880, which makes it about as old as the university itself. As near as we can tell, the house was built and lived in by the developer who developed the neighborhood. We have not just restored the house, we have used Chip’s woodworking skills to make this house a showplace. There is an expansive view of downtown from our front porch. We have a large yard, surrounded by wooded areas, giving a sense of privacy that is unusual in the city.

Cincy Chic: What about your rooms and rates?
Kussmaul: Our rate structure is a little unusual. We rent only to one party of up to six people per night. The first room rents for $125, but each of the other two rooms rent for only $60. However, these two rooms are available only in conjunction with the first room. We are also available for small functions, such as bridal and baby showers.

Cincy Chic: What are some of the amenities you provide for guests?
Kussmaul: A full complimentary breakfast is provided. Snacks and soft drinks are also complimentary.

Cincy Chic: What are some nearby attractions that guests enjoy the most?
Kussmaul: We are within walking distance of the University of Cincinnati and Findlay Market. We are within one or two miles of the zoo, Washington Park, attractions in Over-the-Rhine, Music Hall, Museum Center and downtown.

Cincy Chic: Where can readers go to learn more?
Kussmaul: Our site is In addition, information concerning the restoration is available at
